When we hear that the water available to us for consumption is safe to drink, we expect that said water is clean, drinkable, and safe for our families. Unfortunately, the reality is very different to the story being told.
The Environmental Working Group has collected data from almost 50,000 water utility services across the country to determine just how safe and clean the water running through your pipes are. The truth behind the safety of your tap water isn’t as clear as the water itself.
While the government has given most of the tap water available in the country a passing grade (concerning acceptable levels of heavy metals and other chemicals), you hold the power to decide for yourself whether these levels are truly safe for you—regardless of what the government says.
We took it upon ourselves to look into what exactly is in the tap water in Buffalo, New York, that the Government considers acceptable. The findings aren’t great, and here are the accepted contaminants in our water:
-
Bromodichloromethane
-
Chloroform
-
Chromium (hexavalent)
-
Dibromochloromethane
-
Dichloroacetic acid
-
Nitrate
-
Total trihalomethanes (TTHMs)
-
Trichloroacetic acid
-
Hormones
All the above, except for hormones, were linked to cancer. Tap water is essential for many reasons: nourishment for our bodies, growing food, and hygiene. Yet these acceptable contaminants can be shocking, including lead, cancer-causing chemicals, and in some cases, even radioactive elements.
