What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?
Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP, is blood plasma with concentrated platelets. The concentrated platelets found in PRP contain huge reservoirs of bioactive proteins, including growth factors that are vital to initiate and accelerate tissue repair and regeneration.
How does PRP therapy work?
To prepare PRP, a small amount of blood is taken from the patient. The blood is then placed in a centrifuge, which concentrates the platelets. When injected into damaged tissues, PRP stimulates a mild inflammation that triggers the tissues to heal. In this case, the “injection” is done by a small plastic disc that contains tiny needles attached to the syringe containing the PRP. This is repeated over the area that needs to be treated. PRP is used during and immediately after the procedure. Numbing cream is used before the procedure.
How does PRP therapy work for hair restoration?
The most common cause of hair loss is Androgenic Alopecia or male pattern baldness. This accounts for 96% of hair loss in men and is usually genetic. Androgenic Alopecia is also the most common cause in women, where it produces diffuse thinning. Hormone disorders, such as thyroid disorders, pregnancy, autoimmune disease, nutritional deficits, such as iron deficiency, and traction alopecia, which is too tight ponytails or braids, along with certain medications, can all add to hair loss.
PRP is used in this application to restore hair loss. The growth factors found in the platelets increases blood flow to the hair follicles and attracts stem cells to the area which promotes the growth of new hair.
We use microneedling to deliver PRP inside the scalp with very small needles.
Current strategies for hair restoration include medications such as minoxidil and finasteride, which can have unintended and unpleasant side effects. Other strategies include hair transplantation and regenerative medicine.
